Proposal for an Archive on Squatter Rights

Daniel Kim and I are assembling a digital archive called "East Village Housing and Activism" composed of items relating to housing issues in the East Village in the 1980s and 1990s. We hope to use the best of the items for an exhibit called "The Tompkins Square Park Riot: Precedents and Aftermath," which will focus on the 1988 riot as emblematic of the political and cultural climate of the East Village during this time period. A secondary goal for the exhibit is to illustrate and publicize the rich store of materials in the seven Squatters' Rights Collections at the Tamiment Library, from which we will gather our items. It is our hope that Tamiment will use our completed exhibit and link it to their web page as a form of tangible public outreach.

We hope to include pages dedicated (but not limited) to:
1) The riot itself
2) Other park-centered incidents
3) Neighborhood Squats
4) Park Renovation
5) Non park-related incidents/demonstrations
6) The establishment reaction and perspective
7) Gentrification in general
